Inspiration

Access to food, shelter, education, and emergency help often depends on internet access and complex apps. In emergencies or low-connectivity situations, this becomes a serious barrier. SOS: System of Support was inspired by the idea that help should be accessible anywhere, anytime, even without the internet.

What it does

SOS: System of Support is an offline-first community resource finder that helps users quickly locate NGOs, shelters, food centers, education resources, and emergency contacts. It offers both a simple GUI and a command-line interface (CLI) for fast access, along with Micro Guides to assist first-time visitors.

How we built it

The app is a frontend-only web application using static JSON data, local storage, and a retro terminal-style UI. It works fully offline, includes demo data for easy testing, and avoids unnecessary data collection to maintain user privacy.

Challenges we ran into

The main challenges were keeping the app simple while still useful, designing an intuitive offline CLI, and ensuring realistic demo data without using any real or sensitive information.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Built a fully offline-first resource finder. Implemented a retro terminal + CLI for fast access. Added emergency helplines and Micro Guides for real-world usability. Followed a privacy-first approach with local-only data. Created demo-ready dummy data for easy judging. Delivered a clean MVP within hackathon time limits.

What we learned

We learned the importance of offline-first design, clear UX, and ethical data practices. Even minimal tools can have strong social impact when designed thoughtfully.

What's next for SOS: System of Support

Add verified NGO and hospital updates when online. Support multiple languages for wider accessibility. Enable SMS-based access for non-smartphone users. Expand coverage to more cities and regions. Introduce optional community-verified updates.

Conclusion

SOS: System of Support provides a reliable way to access help when it matters most — Access help. Anywhere. Anytime.
