Our inspiration

Our main challenge was to free our space and do it in an environmentally friendly way. How many of us have things that are used, but are still in good condition? There are options how you can get rid of them quickly, environmentally friendly and close to your home. And the best part that you can do it by taking a photo.

What it does

The SORTIQ app is based on machine learning technology that can detect the item from just one photo. It will show the user the nearest places where the item can be utilized, donated or repaired. It will also educate users and show the nearest organizations, containers or businesses.

How we built it

We started with an idea and a low-fidelity prototype, which we developed to a high-fidelity interactive prototype during the hackathon using Figma. To improve the design by starting to develop the user journey system, to understand the needed design flow. Further, we continued with the UI design of the app in which we integrated the best UI/UX practices. To make the prototype interactive and imitate real life app functions, we used the Figma prototype functionality.

Challenges we ran into

One of the challenges we ran into was the logistics part of how to manage the waste correctly. Basically understand the system, which we will use to manage the waste correctly. The next challenge we faced was to understand the possibilities of machine learning and whether the technology is capable of providing the function that we need for our idea. Additionally, we needed to understand what business model to use for our idea, whether it would be a non-profit organization or something else. Further, we took time to understand what kind of business partners we could gain to better manage the waste recycling and education of people on how to manage waste properly.

What's next for SORTIQ

Our plan is to get business partners. Potential B2B partners could be biggest waste sorting companies, for whom we would help with promoting their waste sorting points and educate people to sort better, which would increase their income. We plan to work together with municipalities. We see this also as an educational tool and a marketing activity to attract more of the public to waste sorting and recycling. We also see this as a great opportunity for big and small companies to work with to reach their sustainability goals and make a better environment and educate people about issues.
