Inspiration
Getting anything fixed in India still means calling around. You ask friends for numbers, phone five mechanics, explain the same job five times, and haggle with each one. Indian home services are a $60B market, over 90% of it runs through local, unorganised providers, and under 1% is booked online. That world runs on phone calls, so we built an agent that makes the calls.
What it does
Sorted: one call, and it's sorted.
- You call once (or tap Call me on the site). Say the job, your address and your price, in any of 11 Indian languages.
- Sorted rings around. It phones local service people who do that work, in whatever language they speak. It asks each one for an all-in price and bargains towards yours, and every next mechanic is asked to beat the best quote so far.
- You get a yes. Sorted calls back with the best offer and a backup, books the one you choose, and locks the price and time with the mechanic on a recorded call.
Safety is built in. Mechanics never hear your budget. Prompt injection, fake staff, abuse and data fishing are refused and flagged. Verified service people win ties, and customers rate the work by phone after the job. You can cancel or reschedule by calling back.
Every call shows up live on the dashboard, with its recording, transcript, summary, quality score and cost.
How we built it
- Voice: Vaani AI agents for the intake, vendor, callback, confirmation and rating calls, with structured fields pulled from each call.
- Backend: Python + FastAPI. It sorts the job into a category, rings matching vendors, compares quotes, picks the best and a backup, and streams every event.
- Frontend: Next.js + React + Tailwind. It has a landing page with Call me, a live dashboard with a toast for every step, a timeline for each request, and a service-people manager.
Challenges we ran into
- Making sense of prices as people say them: "₹800", "800 to 1,000", "visit plus parts", "per hour", "1.5k".
- Keeping the budget secret while still bargaining towards it.
- Holding up against callers who try to talk the agent round.
- Choosing fairly between offers: cheapest firm price first, and ties go to all-in, verified, better rated, then sooner.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
A real job booked end to end in the demo. Shashank asked in Kannada for his room to be painted. Sorted found a painter, got ₹100 all-in, locked the price on a recorded call, booked it, and later collected a rating by phone.
What we learned
Voice agents get useful when every call ends in structured data that the next step can act on.
What's next for Sorted
More service people per area, verified onboarding, and payments after the job.
