Sorta, on r/sorta, is a daily sorting puzzle game on Reddit. Each puzzle is a crossword-shaped grid where every across and down sequence has a cryptic clue like "wheel of fortune" This clue corresponds to a certain ordered sequence like, "UNICYCLE → CHARIOT → SKATEBOARD → TRAIN" with "wheel of fortune" hinting at number of wheels being the pattern (0, 2, 4, LOTS of wheels!). But this is just one of multiple intersecting sequences that you have to solve in only 3 guesses! Beyond the daily curated puzzle, anyone can build and share their own puzzles through a built-in puzzle-creator. Design your own sequences, choose your hints, and the tool validates your grid automatically!

I used Devvit Web with React. The grid layout engine handles arbitrary puzzle shapes — it takes sequence definitions with bridge words and computes cell positions, validates against phantom adjacency (cells that look connected but aren't), and generates responsive CSS grid layouts. I self-hosted fonts, added an error boundary for React 19's aggressive un-mounting, and put a bunch of work into mobile touch targets and drag interactions feeling right on phone screens. The puzzle builder went through several iterations to make grid construction intuitive. Now, it live-previews the grid as you define sequences and highlights bridge connections.

## What's next for Sorta you ask? DAILY PUZZLES! I've hand-written the next couple weeks of daily puzzles while we kick things off. Hopefully, as the subreddit grows, we start getting multiple community puzzle submissions per a day! The puzzle-builder is functional now but I want to add some type of voting and surfacing so the best community-created puzzles rise to the top. I'm now working on a much bigger versions of these puzzle to be used as a weekly puzzle. Happy playing! See you tomorrow on r/sorta! :D
