Inspiration
Due to lack of care, knowledge, and many other factors, people nowadays either don't throw away their trash or throw it away in the wrong trash bin (Think of every time when you have seen a banana peel in the recycling bin). Not only does this make sorting garbage for workers even harder, but it can even pose a health risk, as large plastic bags can easily jam machinery and sharp items can hurt workers, just to name a few. Thus, I created Sort It Out. The purpose of this game is to help people, especially children, build good trash-sorting habits in a fun way, so that they can establish a lifelong love for both animals and planet Earth.
What it does
Sort It Out is a simple pixel-art styled video game where you play as a cute little turtle with a cannon on its back. The goal of the game is simple: Survive 10 waves of trash-based enemies trying to kill you. However, being the morally ethical animal he is, this turtle has decided to not just eliminate the garbage, but also sort it based on which category of trash it belongs to (Recyclable, Compost, Trash/Other), represented by the 3 different colors of pellets (Blue, Green, Red).
How I built it
Sort It Out was made entirely in Unity. Art/Graphics were made using GIMP, music using onlinesequencer.net, sound effects using sfxr.me, and code using c#.
Challenges we ran into
A lot of things regarding game design was new for me, as this is my first official published video game. However, with the help of Unity Forum and Youtube tutorials, I managed to successfully learn everything that I needed to create a video game.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Being my first ever hackathon(yay!), I am very proud of the way my game turned out! Though it might not be "perfect" and refined, being able to create a working game within a tight timeframe is an amazing first step for me towards my future projects.
What we learned
From this one experience alone, I have learned so many different skills and tools for game development. Not only have I become more familiar with Unity's UI, but also with many other programs needed to create a successful game.
What's next for Sort It Out
There are lots of potential for this game in the future, including but not limited to: A boss fight, unique enemy and player abilities, and different play modes. And of course, spreading the game to as many users as possible to teach people about the importance of trash-sorting.
