Inspiration

  • We drew much of our inspiration from the beloved book series Harry Potter to fit with the theme of magic.
  • While formulating our team, we talked about our MBTI and learned that we all have the same if not similar MBTIs making it easy for us to work together and understand each other.
  • We were inspired by our keynote speaker, Vanessa DeVary, to foster a community for freshmen and highlight the importance of networking. (It’s not what you know, but who you know)

What it does

Sorcerer's Sprouts is an enchanted forest-themed app that allows users (freshmen) to foster a community as they embark on their college journey with captivating hand-drawn UI/UX designs, our platform offers an immersive experience. We can build this community by creating a set of questions and setting the user's responses in a 3D data virtualization model to match students together seamlessly. By analyzing and comparing responses, we create meaningful connections that transcend the ordinary, guiding freshmen through their college transition with confidence.

How we built it

We build this app using React and Firebase.

Challenges we ran into

At the beginning of our journey, we struggled a lot with putting all of our ideas together while maintaining a simple app concept and design. As we went further throughout the night we began to tackle new territories and had technical issues with our machine learning implementation.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud to be an all-women team that worked well together creating a full-stack functional project within 24 hours. We experienced many 'first-times' learning how to implement our ideas into code and teaching/bouncing off each other's knowledge to expand our app.

What we learned

In this project, we learned how to animate visuals, troubleshoot our ideas, create machine-learning modules, analyze captured data, and use the data to bring users together.

What's next for Sorcerer's Sprouts

In the future, we hope to be able to expand these platforms to more of our student body (i.e. all undergraduate students, graduate students, and Alumni), build an internal call/messaging system, expand matching to connect students to advisors and mentors, help with community outreach in partnership with student organizations, as well as allow Q&As between users.
