Inspiration
I believe that AI can make site and store management more autonomous and smarter, and where is better to start than the giant that powers almost half of the internet, WordPress and also WooCommerce. We wanted something unlike the existing outdated tools, we wanted a modern tool that can bring the full strength of GPT and other models right inside of your store and site. We started with a focus on WooCommerce then expanded to WordPress in general and added so many features such as Automation, Insights, Marketing Studio, Personalization, Agents, and much more.
What it does
SophMate lets WordPress site owners, agencies, and WooCommerce teams manage their sites through natural language. It turns requests into approval-gated action plans, supports reusable playbooks, tracks AI budgets, automation, insights, and keeps audit logs for safer site operations.
How we built it
We started planning with strict clean architecture in mind, it was more than 7 months ago and back then we used the codex terminal (Codex app was not released yet.) When we started it was a lot tougher because the AI coding agents just started getting into production and as a solo founder I needed as much of work passing to AI as I can, also we had to do so much manual review to keep even our strict clean architecture intact. Back then I was impressed with GPT-5 and made it my primary AI tool alongside Opus from Anthropic, however with the release of GPT-5.6 and the massive development of Codex app I have dropped my Max plan from Anthropic to invest fully into Codex and GPT-5.6 as my only AI tool. I believe that now with GPT-5.6 anyone can have an easier start than we did.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was keeping our clean architecture boundaries which with models before GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.6 was very difficult, but now with the help of the new models it helped us save hours of manual review work.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of SophMate, the commercial product as a whole and every single line of code that was written individually.
What we learned
We learned so much through our journey, and we have seen Codex and GPT models grow exponentially. One of the things that we learned is AI is a great tool but when directed into the correct path, which is important as a software engineer to realize that.
What's next for SophMate
We will not stop here, both SophMate and Codex are going into a long journey together. We will be building more, achieving more together with Codex. Our journey has just began.
