Inspiration

As I started brainstorming for this game, I had a bunch of different ideas. At first I tried making sprites of a run cycle or reusing old pixel art, but it didn't feel right. I then remembered I had this silly alien character I drew while playing a game with my friends. I ended up buying a shirt with the design and happened to be wearing it today. That's when I started working on the music and art of the game.

What it does

It is somewhat a puzzle game where you cannot outrun or attack the enemy. You must outwit them and have them fall into pits or trap them.

How we built it

I built it using Gamemaker Studio 2, Clip Studio Paint, Aseprite and Jummbox. Gamemaker Studio 2 is programming software I'm fairly experienced with, while Clip Studio Paint and Aseprite are art softwares I used to make the assets in the game. Jummbox is a free online music making tool that I enjoy using.

Challenges we ran into

I'm more of an artist than I am a coder, but making pixel art was pretty difficult. I spent a lot of my time trying to animate characters, shade assets correctly and make them look decent. There were of course bugs in the code, but thanks to how straight forward Gamemaker's error messages are, I could figure out what was wrong with them easily.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm proud that I at least made something. I usually never finish a demo of a game to the point where there is a win condition. I'm also quite proud that I managed to do this alone.

What we learned

I learned that if I just sit down and devote my time to making a small game, I can get it done. I never really had the confidence that I could create something like this for a hackathon, but now that I know I can, I feel like I can rely on my skills a little more.

What's next for SOON

I'm probably going to finish the boss battle room I had planned. I was originally going to add it to the hackathon demo, but it's 5 am and I haven't gone to sleep yet.
