Inspiration
As two aspiring and passionate game developers, we wanted to bring a unique project to Hack The North this year, creating a game fully from scratch. We were inspired by concepts that we had worked on in previous hackathon-made games, combined with the theme of Waterloo's iconic mascot, the goose.
What it does
Sooge is a dungeon-crawler arcade game where you play as its namesake character, Sooge the Goose, in his quest of wrath against the squirrels of the forest, ultimately leading to a climactic showdown against the Golden Squirrel at the very end of the forest...
How we built it
Sooge was entirely developed using the Unity Engine and C# programming language. Sound effects were taken from public domain, art was split half and half between self-created (Goose animation, UI, some squirrels, etc.) and online-available asset packs (environment tiles). All environment was self-designed however,
Challenges we ran into
Scoping a game to be created in under 36 hours was challenging. We did our best however to prioritize creating an MVP first (minimum viable product) and ended up scoping well enough to have several hours worth of time for polishing.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating the second instalment of our ambitious bird game franchise. We are happy with the technical achievements we were able to make in this game as opposed to previous game projects, such as fully functional particle systems, pathfinding AI, and a smart procedurally generated room system.
What we learned
We learned that penguins are taller than geese. In addition, it was one of our group member's first project in Unity for game development, so lots of learning was done in that regard.
What's next for Sooge: Wrath of the Goose
Sooge comes as the second instalment of our series of bird games, with the first entry being called Nepguin. We have already started to conceptualize the beginnings of a third game, titled Maflingo...
