SONIC TRACES
As you pass through the city, do you ever see a statue, a monument, a piece of art, and wonder what the story is behind it? Sonic Traces gives you to access to those stories
WHY:
- Provide artists with a new platform for storytelling
- Provide audiophiles with an enhanced narrative experience
- Provide cultural institutions and historic sites with a tool to uncover the history, to engage visitors on an emotional level, and create lasting memories connections.
WHO:
Tourists - as a tool for exploring a new city
Urban explorers – unlocking the hidden stories of their city
Readers - a new way to enjoy a good story and new technology
WHAT:
- smartphones have already revolutionized audio storytelling, audible’s sales were up 30% last year, in a period where ebooks and paperbacks were in decline
- Audible recently committed 5 million to a fund to commission playwrights to create audio plays
- With Sonic Traces, we match those audio plays to specific locations around the city, to create an augmented reality experience.
- The resulting experience creates a lasting emotional connection to our environment – beyond the informational
- For our prototype this week, we have created the first chapter of a mystery/thriller.
- Set right here in this room, narrative leads user along a path – guided by both the narrative and scanned images
- Narrative adds a layer of experience to the space, getting users to look at objects they may have looked at every day in a new way.
HOW:
- We used Unity and Vuphoria to create object tracking for storytelling and Protools for our audio
