Project Story

Inspiration

Everybody in the team loved listening to music but shared the trouble of finding new music that embodied the same theme with the music they already liked. Therefore, this process became a hassle and this project aims to streamline it. A particular moment that sparked the idea was that while we were brainstorming for ideas we realized we all had music open in the background and started ranting about how we over listened to our songs because we love its melody yet couldn't find anything similar to it and decided to do this project as a result.

Learning

As new college grads searching for jobs, we all had a great fundamental understanding of most of the concepts described here, yet this project helped us learn the details that we didn't know we needed before. The addition of AI was a surprising insight for this project as we thought it could "seal the deal" to make this project truly great.

Building the Project

We first came up with the idea, then created a suitable timeline which then got converted into action items which got done as the time approached. We mainly used Google Docs and GitHub to collaborate between ourselves. We parsed a massive TikTok songs library and then used outside information through Google's Gemini AI in order to curate a complete songs playlist full of new and interesting songs. The Spotify integration comes within the ease of use aspect of our project. We didn't want the user to use our program and later have to do anything else, we make API calls to create a playlist and add the songs that we found into it.

Challenges

We were originally 4 teammates working on this project and had a much calmer work split, yet 2 of them quit over time. We really had to adjust our daily schedules in order to complete the project in time. A lot of understanding helped between the remaining teammates to overcome these challenges.

Reflection

Looking back, we both hope we set our ideas and requirements a bit stricter so that we could know which teammates were serious and which weren't. That said, we are both still very proud about this project and happy that we could finish a solid project within the time constraints. The future of this project includes outputting into different song platforms and also utilizing a larger database with more parameters to find closer songs.
