inspiration (the problem):
Uncertain diagnosis and non-recognition of the pathology in lung disease is a yet unresolved problem. Although the auscultation of the internal body sounds is the first step to assess the state of the pulmonary function, the classic stethoscope often determines the uncertain diagnosis reflecting in a non-recognition of the pathology. European data show our business opportunity: at least 1 out of 5 people suffers from chronic diseases suitable for home care, and 4 out of 5 citizens classify medical errors as an important issue. Electronic/digital stethoscopes are emerging in the health market, but they offer a different sound from the natural mechanical performed by the classic stethoscope. They reduce the trust in the auscultation, for this reason, the physicians require additional training, and the high price for replacing acoustic stethoscopes with electronic ones, is slowing its spread. None of them records the natural body sounds to which the “listener” has been accustomed to in their daily routine by using the classic stethoscope. Manual and mechanical stethoscope continue to dominate the market with an average growth rate of 4.46%.
What it does (the solution):
SONEhealth (device, app, web platform, and AI algorithm) is an easy and immediate solution that can be used with any traditional stethoscope. SONEhealth will be capable of listening to a sound (pulmonary), identifying the pathology by comparing it with a sound DB, and predicting the diseases with an AI layer. Our collaboration with a research group led by prof. Andrea Tagarelli, with the Dept. of Computer Engineering from the University of Calabria, Italy, is concerned with the development of a deep-learning-based predictive model for the identification of respiratory anomalies and pathologies from auscultation sound data. This can effectively aid to support clinicians in the diagnosis of most common lung pathologies, including pneumonia that is the main index of patient aggravation in the case of COVID. We solve the problem of sharing sound objectivation and clinical decision support systems for several end-users (GPs, students, nurses practitioners, Hospital pulmonologists). It could be ideal in cases of viral infections, used with Bluetooth headsets, it prevents doctor-patients contact. We are currently in contact with some clinics in Italy (Cosenza Hospital, San Matteo Hospital in Pavia), Poland (LODZ Hospital), and Spain (University hospital of Valencia) with which we are collaborating in the BRIDGEHEAD program and many more after the completion of the first step of this project.
How we built it:
The device is CE marked (TRL9), it was developed thanks to funding received from Italian regional government (ROP-ERDF 2007-2013) and EU (Sme Instr Ph-1). Since 2017 we are in the EIThealth circuit (EIThealth headstart program; EIThealth Bridgehead program), since 2018 we was incubated in ROCKSTART.
Challenges we ran into:
EuvsVirus was an incredible experience. We have runned for 04 challenge (Real time communication & prevention): our solution will collect data for better diagnosis, as a measure to reduce the risk of a new emergency.

What's next for SONEhealth (the value of your solution(s) after the crisis):
After the crisis we hope that each hospitals and clinics have a SONEhelth solution. Our product with a basic App. can be used to auscultate infected patients or suspected patients and perform better auscultation. Improving AI for Sound recognition.
