Summary
Sona is a mood tracker built for Android designed to empower people to alleviate depression, anxiety, and stress. It asks you to take a short questionnaire on your mood and how you're feeling. The idea is that the app will be able to track your mood over time and give you recommendations (such as meditation, social contact, reminders to eat, etc.) based on your scores.
Inspiration
Many of our team members have personal experience with depression and anxiety, and many of us talked with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention before starting the hackathon. Improving mental health is very important to us.
How we built it
We built it in Android Studio using Firebase authentication. We were going to implement Firebase realtime database storage but we didn't quite get there.
Challenges we ran into
We did quite a lot of wrassling with Github to make sure that everyone could work on the project on their own. Lots of merge conflicts.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This is the first hackathon for many of us, and the first time coding for some of us as well. We're super proud that we finished the project and put a lot of love into it.
What we learned
We learned a lot about how to implement Firebase, how to juggle a lot of activities for an Android app, and how to develop a feature list and stay on task for such a short time period.
What's next for Sona
We'd love to improve the design and debug. We didn't quite manage to implement persistent storage and that'd be the first thing we'd fix. We'd also like to expand the features of the app: some ideas we had were emotional journaling in the app and increasing the prescence of our lovable narwhal mascot. :) One core idea we weren't able to implement fully is to 1) give tailored recommendations of what to do based on your mood score and 2) sending notifications or reminders if a user seems at risk. We'd like Sona to feel like a friendly experience that is there for you.
