Inspiration

With the theme of the design-a-thon relating to navigating uncertainty, we decided to explore the most personal unknown world: our dreams! Dreams remain abstract and intangible, simply fleeting fragments of thought and feeling. Yet in that elusiveness, we see their power: People find solace, meaning, and inspiration in their dreams. So we want to help users relive, reflect, and share their dreams!

Additionally, with newer technologies arising, such as Artificial Intelligence media generation and Virtual Reality, we wanted to create a way to navigate through our dreams, whether its on our own journey or with support from others. A way to re-explore our dreams after the matter, and a way for our dreams to be understood by others.

What it does

Somni is a VR-supported journaling app. Users will be able to write or talk about their dreams and, through AI and spatial computing, it will be transformed into an immersive VR experience. Environments to be explored with a mobile device, with a primary focus of recreating or finishing a dream based on input provided by the user.

Users will also be able to share their VR dream experiences with other users on the platform and engage discussions through comment sections! They'll also be able to view their log of dream submissions.

How we built it

We designed everything on Figma. All assets used came from Figma library, plugins, or created by the team in our Figma workspace. However, in order to create the VR environment experiences, we utilized A-Frame and HTML.

Challenges we ran into

Since the app incorporates a social media aspect to it, we gained inspiration from the layouts of social media platforms that we use on the daily. However, we attempted to incorporate two different layouts in Somni, but we found that they didn't work well together and created an unintuitive user experience.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were able to create a clean app interface that includes a VR experience! We were also able to create both a light and dark mode, both, applied with an aesthetic dreamy vibe.

What we learned

We gained valuable knowledge in 3D modeling, and how to utilize frameworks like A-Frame to make your own 3d environments!

What's next for Somni

We would love to be able to add a chatbot that could help users interpret their dreams based off different theories that people have!
