SomaHub Project Story

Inspiration

Education should not depend on where a child lives or the resources available at their school. We were inspired by the desire to democratize learning by giving every student instant access to high-quality CBC learning materials. We wanted learners to prepare for exams faster, find content instantly through intelligent search, and receive personalized support using AI—making learning accessible anytime, anywhere.

What it does

SomaHub is an AI-powered learning platform built for the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). It provides structured lessons, revision notes, quizzes, assignments, assessments, and AI-generated explanations organized by Grade, Subject, Topic, and Lesson. Students can quickly search for learning materials, receive personalized assistance from AI, track their progress, and revise more efficiently through an intuitive learning experience.

How we built it

We built SomaHub using Next.js, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, Firebase Authentication, Firestore, PostgreSQL, and AI technologies. The platform features secure authentication, role-based access, a scalable content management system for administrators, intelligent search, AI-powered tutoring, and responsive dashboards designed for both desktop and mobile users. The architecture was designed to support future expansion across all CBC grades.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was designing a flexible content structure that accurately models the CBC curriculum while remaining simple for administrators to manage and intuitive for students to navigate. Integrating AI in a way that enhances learning without overwhelming students required multiple iterations. We also worked through challenges involving scalable data architecture, fast search performance, and building a sustainable usage model for AI-powered learning.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of building a complete end-to-end educational platform that combines curriculum management, AI learning assistance, intelligent search, assessments, and student progress tracking into one seamless experience. We successfully created a scalable foundation capable of supporting thousands of learners while making quality education more accessible, engaging, and personalized.

What we learned

Building SomaHub strengthened our expertise in full-stack software engineering, cloud architecture, AI integration, user experience design, and educational technology. More importantly, we learned that successful educational products are built by focusing on real student challenges rather than technology alone. Every design decision was guided by improving accessibility, reducing learning barriers, and helping students achieve better learning outcomes.

What's next for SomaHub

Our vision is to make SomaHub the leading AI-powered learning platform for Africa. Next, we plan to expand coverage across all CBC grades, introduce multilingual support, adaptive learning paths, teacher and parent dashboards, offline learning capabilities, gamification, and AI-powered performance analytics. We also aim to integrate voice-based tutoring, collaborative classrooms, and personalized exam preparation to ensure every learner has access to world-class education regardless of their background.
