Inspiration

Solo entrepreneurs and small business owners often have big ideas but very few hands to run them. One person has to handle marketing, social media, sales tracking, customer service, and inventory, all at once. We saw this problem repeatedly among freelancers, small shop owners, and early-stage founders, especially in places like Bangladesh where hiring a full team is not realistic. We wanted to build something that gives a single person the support of a small team, without the cost.

What it does

Solopreneur automates the daily operations of a small business using n8n workflows and AI:

  • Marketing: Creates advertisements for products and posts them automatically on Facebook and LinkedIn
  • Sales Dashboard: Takes sales data and builds a dashboard that updates dynamically
  • Investor Reports: Automatically emails a sales report to investors at the end of each month
  • Inventory Alerts: Sends a Telegram alert to the owner when stock is running low
  • Customer Service: Runs an AI agent on Telegram that talks to customers, answers questions, and takes orders

How we built it

We built Solopreneur using the MERN stack combined with n8n and OpenAI:

  • Frontend: React, for the dashboard and user interface
  • Backend: Express and Node.js, handling API requests and business logic
  • Database: MongoDB, storing product, sales, and customer data
  • AI: OpenAI API, powering the ad copy generation, the Telegram customer service agent, and the sales report summaries
  • Automation: n8n workflows, connecting everything together — triggering the Facebook and LinkedIn posts, running the monthly report emails, checking inventory levels, and sending Telegram alerts

The React dashboard pulls sales data from MongoDB through the Express API and displays it dynamically. n8n workflows run on a schedule or are triggered by events, like a new sale or low stock, and call the OpenAI API where content needs to be generated or a customer message needs to be understood, then push results out to Facebook, LinkedIn, Telegram, or email.

Challenges we ran into

Connecting so many different pieces into one working system was the biggest challenge. n8n had to coordinate MongoDB, the OpenAI API, and three separate platforms (Facebook, LinkedIn, and Telegram), each with its own API rules and rate limits, so a failure in one step could break the whole workflow.

Getting the Telegram agent to hold a natural conversation was harder than expected. Customers don't ask questions in a fixed format, so we had to refine our OpenAI prompts several times to correctly understand orders, product names, and quantities from casual, sometimes unclear messages.

Keeping the React dashboard in sync with live sales data was also tricky. We had to make sure MongoDB updates flowed through the Express API and reflected on the dashboard without delay or stale data.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of building a working end-to-end pipeline: a sale recorded in MongoDB can trigger an n8n workflow, update the live dashboard, and eventually reach the inventory alert and reporting logic, all without manual steps.

We're also proud of the Telegram customer service agent actually holding a conversation and correctly capturing order details using the OpenAI API, instead of relying on fixed button-based commands.

Getting three separate systems, the React frontend, the Express/MongoDB backend, and n8n automation, to talk to each other reliably was a real milestone for our team.

What we learned

We learned how to design multi-step n8n workflows that call external APIs, handle errors, and pass data between steps reliably.

We also learned a lot about prompting AI models for a specific job: getting OpenAI to reliably extract structured order information from unstructured chat messages required a lot of trial and error.

Finally, we learned how to connect a traditional MERN stack app with automation and AI tools, which was new for most of the team, and gave us a better sense of how to build practical, production-style systems rather than isolated demo scripts.

What's next for Solopreneur

  • Add support for more platforms, such as Instagram and WhatsApp
  • Add multi-language support for customer conversations
  • Add AI-powered sales predictions and smarter inventory forecasting
  • Build a simple onboarding flow so any small business owner can set it up without technical help
  • Test with real small businesses and refine based on their feedback
