Inspiration
All members of our team have travelled solo abroad and have found that solo travellers often have fewer resources or information simply because they are travelling alone. Travel broadens people's horizons and fosters a deeper understanding of different cultures and global perspectives—something especially vital during times of global conflict, when misinformation, prejudice, and fear can flourish. Travel is also a priceless experience that helps facilitate personal growth. This inspired our team's desire to create an application that supports solo travelers and empowers people to experience the world and appreciate the beauty in our differences.
What it does
soloGo provides a one-stop shop with accurate and up-to-date safety information for different countries, offering cultural insights using AI to compile information that is important based on the user's specific background and demographics, connection with other solo travellers using soloNet, which allows users to share information on their trip itineraries for easy access for themselves, and to create inspiration for other travellers, and soloNet Map which allows users to document where they have travelled and share it with the soloNet community.
How we built it
We first brainstormed numerous different application ideas based on solo travelling and the problems we have faced in our own experiences as solo travellers. We began developing our project pitch, and our design using Figma. We developed the project using Next.js and Tailwind CSS, using numerous APIs to help provide data and functionality used in our application.
Challenges we ran into
We had numerous technical hiccups relating to accessing data from government sites, due to their security measures. There was also a learning curve as members of our team had limited experience with web development.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of how we developed our idea, moving from different iterations until we found something that we thought would be the most beneficial to our target user audience. This idea was based on our own valued personal experiences and beliefs, which strengthened our passion for this project.
What we learned
We learned a lot about working as a team, delegating different tasks to each other, communicating our ideas, and supporting each other. We learned a lot surrounding task management and prioritizing on developing our most important features, especially since our team had such a broad range of ideas to pick from. Our team also gained a lot of experience with working with Next.js, Tailwind, and integrating APIs.
What's next for SOLOGO
We hope to flesh out soloGo's features. Although we were able to deploy our project, we don't currently support multiple users as we initially envisioned.
