Inspiration
As teenage girls in the 21st century, we sometimes find ourselves unconsciously losing self-esteem against society's standards. In some cases, these insecurities develop into unhealthy habits and weakened mental health. For people having trouble with their eating disorders, we want to supply a safe place for them to start healing themselves both mentally and physically. We had personal experience with friends who struggled to overcome eating disorders as teen girls. Resources besides paid medical treatment were hard to find. For people who aren’t financially advantaged, healing from eating disorders are difficult.
What it does
Over 30 million people in the U.S. suffer from an eating disorder. The vast majority of those diagnosed have been proven to suffer from other mental conditions such as depression, anxiety, OCD, and PTSD. Evidently, the state of our psyche has a huge impact on our nutrition intake and equally so vice versa. And even though our inner conscience may want to heal, many external factors tend to stall the process of recovering. So, we created Solarize, a multi-functioning website that aims to help those on their journey towards reaching health, both mentally and physically. With public or private support groups to confide in, daily journals to clear their thoughts and document their feelings, diagnostic tests to catch sight of unhealthy habits early on, and personalized meal plans to guide them towards a healthy weight and lifestyle, Solarize offers its full assistance.
How we built it
We built this website using HTML, CSS, and JS. In addition, we used PHP and MySQL to make the database and connect with the website. We used several APIs including Google Maps and Text to Speech for the Chatbot. For the formatting, we used Bootstrap.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into challenges with the Meal Planning software as we couldn’t display options for meals using JQuery as it was a new language we learned during this event. In addition, we had some trouble with integrating the database with the website.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of creating a completed project with multiple functional features. We are also proud of learning a new language, Javascript and J Query.
What we learned
We learned Javascript and jQuery during this hackathon as well as how to make a database functional!
What's next for Solarize
We would like to expand our treatment area with a mindfulness feature. In addition, we wanted to include a sentiment analyzer with the journaling feature but we didn’t have time. This sentiment analyzer would allow us to identify the user’s mood and provide associated resources. Lastly, we would like to increase the amount of recipes provided using the Edamum API. We didn’t have enough time to fully implement it but it would be a more exact selection of recipes better catered to the user’s need.
