Inspiration
The unique visuals of the _ Solarpunk _ aesthetic, as well as similar designs from films and games in the SciFi genre. The Star Trek, Destiny, and Mass effect franchises all served as sources of inspiration.
What it does
Serves as the player character's primary ship and base of operations in my upcoming game project titled, _ Solar Sails _
How we built it
Initial concepts were drafted in photoshop and consisted of numerous design iterations. Once a concrete vision was in place, modeling proceeded in Blender, before being imported into Adobe Substance Painter for the texturing process. The model was then reimported into Blender to take several showcase renders showing off the asset. Lastly, the asset was imported into the Unity engine for use on the _ Solar Sails _ game project.
Challenges we ran into
Initial design concepting was easily the most challenging portion of this project, as I struggled to integrate aspects of the _ Solarpunk _ aesthetic while still considering the proposed functionality of a space ship, especially so since this was the first asset created for the game it is featured in, giving me very little to reference in regards to visual design.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Condensing sources of inspiration into a unique visual style, while retaining an original identity. Initiating a complete development pipeline, from concept to integration into a game engine additionally serves as an accomplishment I am proud of.
What we learned
In addition to the general experience into the design process this project afforded, specific applications of Adobe Substance Painter were discovered and honed throughout development, which greatly influenced future utilization of the software.
What's next for Solarius - 4
As my team continues development of _ Solar Sails _, populating the interior of the Solarius - 4 is one of my primary tasks, honing my skills in the field of environment design in order to create a space that feels both lived in, and functional.
