Inspiration

Phase 1: The MICROSOFT AI LEARNING HACKATHON announcement sent a thrill of excitement through me. It was an opportunity to not only learn but also contribute to something innovative - an AI co-pilot to assist users! This was my first-ever hackathon, and I was eager to dive in (05/30/2024 - 06/03/2024).

What it does

The co-pilot assists users by leveraging AI technologies to provide intelligent responses and support.

How I built it

The first few days were a whirlwind of learning. I immersed myself in understanding AI technologies, database management, and exploring Azure services like Cosmos DB and OpenAI. I watched numerous YouTube videos and took extensive notes to gain a comprehensive understanding of these topics. Each concept and tool I encountered laid a crucial foundation for building the co-pilot, sparking my imagination with the endless possibilities (05/30/2024 - 06/03/2024).

However, as I began implementing the co-pilot, I encountered my first hurdle. The limitations of the recommended Azure Cosmos DB for MongoDB (free tier) posed a significant challenge (06/04/2024). Undeterred, I pivoted to MongoDB Atlas, leveraging its robust capabilities to ensure the project's continuity and success (06/04/2024 - 06/06/2024).

There were moments of frustration, particularly when accessing Azure OpenAI services initially seemed out of reach (06/04/2024 - 06/05/2024). Fortunately, discovering the provided API keys and endpoints for Azure OpenAI services proved to be a pivotal breakthrough. It revitalized my efforts, allowing me to fully focus on integrating advanced AI functionalities into the co-pilot (06/05/2024).

The following days were a blur of coding and experimentation. Utilizing tools like Azure Proxy Playground, I fine-tuned the co-pilot's capabilities, experiencing numerous "aha moments" as features came together seamlessly (06/07/2024 - 06/08/2024). Despite resource constraints, my perseverance paid off as I refined the co-pilot, ensuring it was intuitive and effective for end-users (Throughout Development).

Finally, on June 11th, 2024, after countless hours of dedication, the co-pilot was complete! Overwhelmed with a mix of exhaustion, relief, and pride, tears welled up in my eyes. This first hackathon experience was a rollercoaster, but one that I wouldn't trade for anything (06/11/2024).

Challenges I ran into

  • Limitations of Azure Cosmos DB for MongoDB (free tier)
  • Initial difficulties accessing Azure OpenAI services
  • Resource constraints during development

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

  • Successfully integrating AI technologies and database solutions into a functional co-pilot.
  • Overcoming technical challenges and completing the project within the hackathon timeline.

What I learned

The MICROSOFT AI LEARNING HACKATHON was a transformative journey, providing invaluable insights into:

  • AI Technologies: I deepened my understanding of AI concepts and their practical applications through hands-on experience.
  • Database Management: Mastering MongoDB Atlas and Azure Cosmos DB enhanced my skills in efficient data handling and optimization.
  • Problem-solving Skills: Overcoming technical challenges strengthened my ability to innovate and find effective solutions under pressure.

What's next for Solaris

The journey continues beyond the hackathon:

  • Continuous Improvement: I am committed to refining Solaris, continuously enhancing its functionality and user experience.
  • Exploration of New Technologies: I eagerly anticipate exploring cutting-edge AI advancements and integrating them to further empower Solaris.
  • Community Engagement: Engaging with users and the developer community will drive ongoing enhancements and ensure Solaris meets evolving needs effectively.

This hackathon was just the beginning of Solaris's journey toward becoming a robust AI co-pilot, and I look forward to its future evolution and impact.
