Inspiration Constellations look flat from Earth, but their stars can be very far apart. We wanted to reveal the real science behind familiar sky patterns.
What it does Solaria unfolds constellations into 3D, shows how their stars move over time, and identifies whether they form a real family or a chance alignment.
How we built it We used React and TypeScript for the interface, Python and FastAPI for the backend, and data from Gaia, Hipparcos, APOGEE, and other astronomy surveys.
Challenges we ran into The main challenges were combining different catalogs, handling missing data, representing uncertainty, and keeping the 3D experience smooth and understandable.
Accomplishments that we are proud of We built an interactive experience covering 88 constellations and 710 bright stars, supported by a larger research pipeline containing more than 362 thousandstars.
What we learned We learned how distance, motion, chemistry, age, and uncertainty can work together to uncover relationships between stars.
What is next for Solaria We plan to publish the experience, add classroom activities, improve mobile support, and expand the scientific tools for discovering stellar families.
