Inspiration
The inspiration for Solar Trader is an old board game which is no longer sold. It was a favourite board game of our team members when they were younger so we decided to remaster it as a video game.
What it does
In this game the players play as space ship and quite literally bridge worlds by moving between planets and trading commodities such as food, water and oxygen. These trades allow you to upgrade your ship to move faster and trade more, whilst avoiding black hazards and random squares which can trigger an event (either good or bad). Then after a player has acquired their upgrades and has gold, sliver and diamonds they can then make the treacherous journey to Zastra to collect a crystal and bring it back to earth.
How we built it
We built this using python's pygame library, the images were done based on the original game boards and features. Challenges we overcame: We managed to code all the rules into python such as players can only move in one direction between planet, to turn around they have to 'bounce' off specific planets to get to the required destinations
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud the we managed to create a functioning game in 24hours which we feel does justice to the nostalgia of the original board game.
What we learned
We learned a-lot, about the logic and intricacies of coding a video game in python, including how to better improve our time management.
