We were inspired by the challenges given by Atom Bank and BitFX. As a group of international students, we are very aware of the impact that international transactions and online banking have on society as a whole. We have decided to create a mobile application catered to university students, with the aim of helping them in budgeting and saving.
Technologies used
To create this project, we agreed to use Unity as a starting point. As most of us have C# experience, and the rapid UI prototyping in Unity is far superior to that which is present in web development, we decided to go with the former.
Prototyping of the UI elements was done in Figma, while some of the functionalities were done in Python. The Python portions of code include MatPlotLib and Pandas as well as Numpy, the ordinary data manipulation suspects. Game assets were created in PhotoShop and Gimp.
What we learned
These past 24h were quite insightful for us. This was the first hackathon for many, and the atmosphere here was unlike anything we've seen before. Networking with industry professionals and attending their workshops has opened our eyes to what the industry standard is, and how coding is done at scale and under certain constraints. Working on our project has also bolstered our collaborative abilities, and work in Unity has been helpful to everybody's skillset, no matter the skill involved.
We've faced a solid amount of challenges, from Github acting up to sneaky Unity bugs. All in all, we've surpassed these obstacles and created a project that we are satisfied with, no matter the slight roughness in certain places.
