Inspiration
One of our team members has a family history of skin cancer and has to be extra careful to avoid sun damage. We thought this would be an amazing opportunity to compile information for her sake and to raise awareness of the issue as a whole.
What it does
We have created a website to raise awareness about sun damage and UV radiation. It consists of general information, possible causes, and treatment options for existing sun damage.
How we built it
We used HTML, CSS and Javascript to design our website. We used Porkbun's static hosting to put our website on the internet.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest issue we faced was with formatting after uploading our code to GitHub. Our website worked perfectly on a local host, but some features did not work on the online host. So, we had to rewrite entire parts of our code at the last minute to regain full functionality. Through good collaboration and perseverance, we made it happen.
Accomplishments that we're proud of and what we learned
We are extremely proud of the fact that we were able to design an entire website in a day. This is especially because while two of our team members had previous programming experience (and only one with the languages we used), two of our members had minimal prior experience. Despite this, everyone made meaningful contributions to the project in the end, and the contributions were relatively even. This was an amazing learning opportunity for everyone from both a technical and collaborative aspect.
What's next for Solar Safe
We are going to keep our website online and continue to make contributions. We will share our website with our friends, families, and peers in order to continue to raise awareness on sun damage and skin cancer.
