Solar Panel Energy Production Improvements

Inspiration

We wanted to create a tool that allowed users to visualize how much energy they could produce through solar energy in order to support alternative energies.

What it does

Based on user input (Surrounding area, location, altitude, size and type of panel), the user will be able to efficiently calculate the amount of energy they produce.

How we built it

We initially mathematically modeled using single and multivariable calculus, then we were able to hardcoded a method for users to input simple specifications to allow for specific results.

Challenges we ran into

Developing the mathematical model and the final .exe as well as learning how to build a website through GitHub

I developed the code for the stand-alone program. The program allows users to input conditional variables (location away from the equator, altitude, horizon lines) and then receive data on production of power (results are obtained through our mathematical model). While the code was simple to write, turning the python code into a stand alone program was extremely difficult. Overall though the project was a lot of fun.

Tarek Hassoun
I developed the math model and equations that were the central part of the coded program. They were difficult and time consuming to do because I do think have a large background in mathematical modeling of systems with multiple variables.

Kaylee Dunnigan
I worked on making a base website to display information about solar panels and made a 3D model of a duel axis solar panel using Inventor. The website is hosted on github, and was done by altering a base template with html, css, and javascript. It was actually pretty challenging, because before this, I'd never coded in html, css, or javascript, and I never used github before. Getting started was the hardest part.
