Inspiration

This lens was inspired by the cartoon trope of a dizzy character with birds spinning around their head. I revamped that concept to have planets spinning around a persons head and stars in their eyes. My lens is meant to be fun to use while also subtly suggesting that users have the power to impact our solar system and save the planet earth. Climate Change is a big problem and the youth who use Snap will play a big part in solving it!

What it does

The lens overlays suns over the user's eyes and has planets from our solar system revolving around their heads with VFX stars in the background. In a way, they become the ruler of the universe when using my lens which is the effect I intended when conceiving the idea. Make users feel that our solar system revolves around them like our sun to get them motivated to take action on saving the planet earth which needs them right now.

How we built it

I built this lens primarily with lens studio features and also utilizing Photoshop to help make the suns within a users eyes. The bulk of the lens was created using built-in lens studio features like head-binding, tween transform, and VFX.

Challenges we ran into

I had some trouble understanding how to add the glow effect to the lens, but after some tweaking I figured it out. The glow effect was omitted from my first submission because I did not know how to apply it, but I figured it out and decided to make a new and improved version of my first lens.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am just proud that I managed to learn so much more about lens studio this second submission and feel I have made a new and improved version of my initial concept.

What we learned

I learned through Snap Lensathon office hours that simple is often better than complex. I originally wanted to use all the cool VFX, physics, and full face and body functionality of lens studio, but I realized that this would only make the lens too complex and people would not use it. I am now comfortable with making simple things that convey my point opposed to overly complex stuff.

What's next for Solar Flair

I plan on learning more about touch triggers to add a button on screen to allow users to make the screen dark as outer space with only the stars and planets visible and then press the same button to bring the light back. (edit: I have just added this feature)
