Solace- Project Story
About the Project
Solace is a mobile application designed to help people cope with loneliness and homesickness. In today’s fast-paced and hyper-connected world, many individuals especially students, working professionals, and parents living away from home experience emotional isolation. This project explores how design can create a gentle digital space for emotional comfort and self-reflection.
Inspiration
The inspiration for Solace came from observing how many people silently struggle with loneliness when they move away from their families or familiar environments. Even though technology connects us socially, it often fails to address our internal emotional needs. I wanted to design something that feels calm, reflective, and emotionally supportive rather than overwhelming.
This led me to explore two human sensory concepts: • Chronoception — our perception of time • Interoception — our awareness of internal emotional and bodily states
By combining these ideas, We aimed to create an experience that encourages users to slow down and reconnect with themselves.
How we Built the Project
The design process started with identifying key user groups such as students, working professionals, and mothers living away from their support systems. We created user personas, empathy maps, and user flows to understand their emotional needs and daily struggles.
The interface focuses on calming interactions, such as slow-moving lotus petals, mood reflection prompts, and simple visual feedback. The goal was to create a minimal and soothing experience that allows users to pause, acknowledge their emotions, and feel supported.
Prototypes were designed to emphasize gentle motion, quiet visuals, and emotional awareness rather than heavy functionality.
What we Learned
Through this project, We learned how design can address emotional wellbeing, not just functional problems. It helped me explore the importance of sensory design, emotional empathy, and slow interaction patterns in creating meaningful user experiences. We also learned how concepts from psychology and human perception can influence interaction design and storytelling in products.
Challenges
One of the biggest challenges was translating abstract emotional concepts like loneliness and inner awareness into tangible design interactions. Another challenge was ensuring the experience remained simple, calming, and non-intrusive, without overwhelming the user with too many features.
Balancing emotional depth with usability required multiple iterations and careful design decisions.
Conclusion
Solace aims to transform moments of loneliness into moments of reflection, awareness, and emotional comfort. The project explores how thoughtful design can create a small but meaningful digital sanctuary where users feel understood and less alone.
