Sol's Pixel Dungeon

Inspiration

On July 13, I came across Thibault Sottiaux's post about OpenAI Build Week on X. With only one week left before the deadline, I decided to challenge myself: build a Minecraft project I had always wanted to make but had never actually finished.

The idea started as a recreation of Pixel Dungeon inside Minecraft, but quickly evolved into something new.

What it does

Sol's Pixel Dungeon recreates the core roguelike experience of Pixel Dungeon in Minecraft, including procedural dungeons, progression, enemies, weapons, and equipment.

The biggest original feature is a multiplayer mechanic: when a player dies, they don't simply spectate. Instead, they can enter another player's dungeon by possessing monsters and actively interfere with that player's adventure.

How I built it

I started the project with ChatGPT 5.5, using it to design systems, prototype gameplay, and build the project's foundation.

When GPT-5.6 (Sol) became available during Build Week, it became my primary development partner. Together we discussed gameplay mechanics, selected the most suitable Minecraft server platform, solved compatibility issues between multiple mods, debugged complex systems, optimized gameplay, and refined monster and weapon pixel art based on my own hand-drawn designs.

Challenges

The biggest challenge wasn't writing code—it was finishing the project.

I have a habit of starting ambitious projects and expanding them continuously. Before this project, many of them never reached completion.

Build Week gave me a deadline, and working with ChatGPT helped me continuously converge on decisions instead of endlessly expanding ideas.

What I learned

This project changed the way I develop software.

ChatGPT didn't replace my creativity or make decisions for me. Instead, it helped me iterate faster, organize complex work, and maintain momentum throughout development.

Without that collaboration, I honestly don't think I could have completed this project within a single week.

Creation is Everywhere.
