Inspiration

Inspired by the lack of attention given to plant care around the world, our Soil Singer aims to make the process of watering plants more 'fun' and convenient for the average user.

What it does

By utilizing a speaker with a soil moisture sensor, our project gives out a certain melody of notes to the user whenever a plant needs to be watered by the user. When the plant is watered and satisfied, the melody ends until the soil moisture level goes below the safety level for a healthy plant.

How we built it

We programmed two Arduino boards, an Arduino Pro Mini and Arduino Uno, in order to create a Bluetooth element of lighting and speaker connectivity whenever the target plant needs to be watered. We used different skills from lab and beyond in order to program the Arduino's along with different libraries that helped guide us throughout the process.

Challenges we ran into

Initially, the connection between the Arduino Pro Mini and the cable from the code was too faulty to process and upload. We then decided to solder the board onto the breadboard alongside a solder element to the adapter from the ProMini in order to guarantee a safe connection.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The aesthetic design of the project is something we are proud of as we decided to focus on both aspects of a successful product beyond utility. The lighting and sound amplification of the two 3D printed flamingos on the side was something we are especially proud of as it added an extra element of style.

What we learned

We learnt a lot about how to use an Arduino, and build circuits. We also learnt how to code in Arduino, and became very good at it. We also learnt how to print objects in 3D, and how to link various sensors to the Arduino to make a comprehensive final project.

What's next for Soil Singer - Azd and Reeda Team 9

In the future, we plan on adding more sensors to increase the practical functionality of the product. We want to add humidity sensors and temperature sensors, and we also want to enclose the whole design in a plastic 3D printed shell. With the Bluetooth controlled light, the whole shell will illuminate, and make it more aesthetically pleasing.
