Inspiration

As people who have studied foreign languages, we found it challenging to find structured learning materials and get enough practice talking about interesting, real-world topics whenever we wanted. Existing language learning materials don't provide this. We wanted to create an app that allowed learners to discuss subjects they cared about while improving their vocabulary and conversation skills.

What it does

PartyRock fosters a realistic Italian conversation environment and hosts our an AI assistant named Sofia, an Italian Teacher. Users can select a topic of their choice - dentist visits, food, cars, ice cream, sports, politics, or any other subject. Sofia then offers core vocabulary, sample dialogues, comprehension stories, engaging visuals, and chat practice.

How we built it

Defining the system and user personas for our learning auditory, JBTD, and then the functions we can implement with PartyRock were the most significant aspects of the process.

Creating the PartyRock App was a smooth process, thanks to PartyRock's user-friendly interface, which allowed us to quickly turn our idea into reality. We tested the concept with friends, and it was exciting to see how well it worked with the AI provided by Bedrock.

Developing PartyRock was a learning experience. We had to improve our Italian skills to create meaningful content.

Challenges we ran into

The experience with PartyRock was generally smooth, but there were some limitations to the platform. However, we view these as a good starting point for transferring to a custom app built in-house, leveraging the capabilities of the Bedrock API.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that PartyRock lets users learn Italian through conversations about topics they enjoy. The AI integration for open-ended practice is powerful. Combining our interests in languages, technology, and engaging education into one app is very satisfying. We've made improvements by incorporating AI-generated materials on our website https://tonales.com/. With Sofia's assistance, we plan to expand and enhance the content further.

What we learned

This project taught us a lot - from improving our own Italian, to learning about AI. But most importantly, we learned how to create an effective and immersive language AI learning experience.

What's next for Sofia, your friendly Italian Teacher

Firstly, we are eager to receive feedback from real users. Suggestions for improvement and ideas for new features will help us continue to develop Sofia as a top-notch conversational AI assistant.

We are excited to keep expanding Sofia's capabilities, adding more interaction possibilities such as audio, voice, and video features to make it an even better platform for learning tools. We also plan to explore gamification to create more engaging practice scenarios.

Currently, the app focuses on vocabulary acquisition, but we aim to expand our offerings by developing additional teacher apps tailored to various aspects of language learning.

The impressive capabilities of Claude models have inspired us, and we are considering the development of a custom app built in-house. This app would utilize the AWS Bedrock API to take advantage of its functionalities.

Moreover, we are interested in adding more languages and language pairs to the learning experience.
