Inspiration
Stay-at-home mums manage household budgets worth thousands every year with zero professional support. Financial advisors charge £200 an hour. Every budget app is built for individuals, not for a mum juggling groceries, school trips, energy bills, and a child asking about investments they saw on TikTok. SOFIA was built because every mum deserves a financial best friend who answers instantly, judges nothing, and costs £1 a month.
What it does
SOFIA is a voice-first financial assistant built for UK stay-at-home mums. She tracks spending across groceries, takeaways, bills, and fuel. She answers any money question live — from scam detection to energy bill reduction to starting a Junior ISA with £10. She speaks back using ElevenLabs voice AI. Every conversation ends with a "DO THIS WEEK" action plan with real UK prices and real steps. No jargon. No lectures. No bank login required.
How we built it
Flask backend with multi-agent AI architecture — four specialist agents (Financial Friend, Deal Scout, Emotional Support, Practical Helper) routed by intent. Gemini API for reasoning. ElevenLabs for voice interaction. PII scrubbing engine strips personal data before any cloud call. RevenueCat handles £1/month subscriptions. PostgreSQL stores user context and spending history. Deployed on Koyeb. Flutter frontend for Android.
Challenges we ran into
Privacy was the hardest constraint. Building a financial assistant that gives personalised advice without storing personal data required a novel PII scrubbing and audit trail architecture. Keeping token costs low while maintaining quality meant using Python for heavy data processing and AI only for interpretation. Voice latency with ElevenLabs needed careful streaming optimisation to feel like a real conversation, not a delayed chatbot.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
A working multi-agent financial assistant that gives real UK prices, real savings calculations, and real investment guidance — built solo. The PII architecture means zero personal data leaves the device. SOFIA tells a mum that switching milk from Tesco to Aldi saves £240 a year, flags Rainbow Investments as a scam in 30 seconds, and builds a savings plan for a £400 school trip. One app. No financial advisor needed.
What we learned
How to protect AI yet use its power to maximum effect — the combination of Python for data analysis and AI for interpretation keeps costs down and quality up. That voice-first changes everything for busy mums who can't type while cooking. That privacy-first architecture is not a limitation but a feature that builds trust. And that £1/month is the right price point to make financial help accessible to everyone.
What's next for SOFIA — Smart Online Financial Information Assistant
NHS Digital evaluation for integration into family support services. Real-time price comparisons from Tesco, Aldi, and Sainsbury's using Gemini API with grounding. Push notifications for proactive alerts when bills spike or deals match spending patterns. iOS version. Expansion beyond UK with localised financial guidance for other markets. Investment needed to scale infrastructure and add real-time data sources.
