Inspiration
The inspiration behind "Sofa King Sad Boi Gee Wiz" came from the raw emotional landscape of lo-fi EDM culture and the need to visualize the deep, melancholic feelings that electronic music can evoke. As someone who hosts EDM events and curates visual experiences, I wanted to create a music video that captures that late-night introspective vibe—where you're simultaneously feeling everything and nothing, drowning in bass drops and synthesized emotions. The title itself is a playful phonetic wordplay that reflects the ironic humor embedded in sad boi culture.

This AI-generated music video transforms an original EDM track into a cinematic visual journey. The video features moody, atmospheric scenes with a protagonist trapped in surreal environments—moving between dark rooms, mysterious corridors, and dreamlike spaces. Using AI video generation tools, we synchronized visual transitions with the track's tempo, drops, and emotional peaks, creating a cohesive audiovisual experience that amplifies the music's emotional impact. The aesthetic blends analog horror influences with modern electronic music culture, creating something both unsettling and hypnotic.
How we built it
We approached this project with a multi-stage creative workflow:
- Music Production: Started with an original lo-fi EDM track featuring deep bass, melancholic synths, and atmospheric pads
- AI Video Generation: Utilized AI video generation models to create the core visual sequences, focusing on moody cinematography and surreal environments
- Prompt Engineering: Crafted detailed prompts to achieve the specific aesthetic—dark interiors, dramatic lighting, analog horror-inspired compositions
- Post-Production: Synchronized the AI-generated clips with the music's structure, ensuring visual transitions matched beat drops and emotional shifts
- Color Grading: Applied color correction to enhance the moody, desaturated aesthetic consistent with lo-fi and sad boi visual culture
The entire project was built using browser-based tools and AI platforms, allowing for rapid iteration and creative experimentation.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was maintaining visual consistency across AI-generated scenes. Each prompt would produce slightly different character representations and environmental aesthetics, making it difficult to create a coherent narrative flow. We had to iterate extensively on prompts and carefully select shots that maintained stylistic continuity.
Another major hurdle was timing—synchronizing AI-generated video clips (which have variable lengths) to specific moments in the track required precise editing and occasionally regenerating scenes to match the music's pacing. Additionally, balancing the analog horror aesthetic with the EDM vibe without making the video too dark or alienating required careful creative calibration.

What we learned
This project taught us invaluable lessons about AI-assisted creative workflows:
- Prompt engineering is an art form: Crafting effective prompts for video generation requires understanding both technical parameters and artistic vision
- Iteration is essential: AI tools produce variable results—creative success comes from generating multiple versions and selecting the best outputs

- Cross-disciplinary skills: Successfully executing an AI music video requires knowledge of music production, video editing, color grading, storytelling, and AI tool operation
