🚀 Inspiration

Education today often focuses on memorization instead of understanding. Students learn answers for exams but struggle to apply concepts in real life. We were inspired by the Socratic method, where teachers guide students through questions rather than giving direct answers. We wanted to combine this timeless teaching philosophy with GPT-5.6 to create an AI that teaches students how to think, not just what to learn.

💡 What it does

SocraticSchool is an AI-powered digital learning platform that transforms education through guided learning. Instead of providing answers, GPT-5.6 asks adaptive questions that help students discover solutions independently. The platform also generates personalized assessments, builds a live knowledge graph, tracks student progress, detects weak concepts, provides AI-powered teacher analytics, automates parent reports, and assists with syllabus planning and classroom management.

🛠️ How we built it

We built SocraticSchool using Next.js 14, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, Supabase, OpenAI GPT-5.6, Framer Motion, Recharts, and D3.js. GPT-5.6 powers multiple AI workflows, including Socratic tutoring, concept extraction, adaptive assessments, weakness detection, parent reports, and intelligent classroom insights.

⚡ Challenges we ran into

Our biggest challenge was designing an AI that genuinely follows the Socratic method instead of revealing answers. We also had to maintain personalized learning histories, build dynamic knowledge graphs, adapt question difficulty in real time, and integrate multiple AI features into one seamless platform while keeping the experience intuitive for both students and teachers.

📚 What we learned

This project taught us that effective AI in education is about guiding discovery rather than providing answers. We gained valuable experience in prompt engineering, AI system design, full-stack development, streaming AI applications, and creating personalized learning experiences powered by large language models.

🌍 What's next for SocraticSchool

Our next goal is to support multilingual learning, voice conversations, collaborative classrooms, curriculum integration, accessibility features, and deeper personalization. We envision SocraticSchool becoming an AI-native education platform that empowers students, teachers, and schools worldwide while making learning more engaging, thoughtful, and accessible.
