Inspiration
America is currently facing a crisis in chronic student absenteeism. We wanted to tackle this problem by increasing engagement in students to bring them back to school.
What it does
This is an educational app designed by Aleks Jacewicz, Rory McClenahan, Lewis Chao, and Gavin Horning-Kane to increase engagement among students. It is designed to create 3 groups in a class. Two groups create a presentation and then the third group judges the last group and votes on the best group. This will incentivize both discussion and collaboration, especially during this crisis of chronic absenteeism. It also allows teachers to create the docs that the groups use and also observe all the students. The teacher can also manage the groups, allowing them to reassign students if they need to.
How we built it
We used React, PHP, and MySql
Challenges we ran into
We ran into several issues with the google docs integration, especially as a tool we were going to use was depreciated last night, March 30th.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the google docs integration, as that was the most challenging aspect.
What we learned
We learned how to integrate google docs into a react project.
What's next for Socratic Circle
We plan on creating more finishing touches and approaching local schools to our university and try to see if we can implement the app on a limited basis in their classrooms.
