Writing essays are hard. Today, countless students are turning to AI tools to help draft essays for applying to scholarships, such as Claude and Chatgpt. However, LLMs lack lots of features of an all-in-one workplace, and often generate generic responses that become cloudier the more we reprompt.

Socratic helps scholars write fine-tuned responses within a user-friendly, collaborative working experience that lets the student work alongside AI.

What it does

  • Reveals hidden weight criteria behind scholarship prompts.
  • Uses dynamic prompting to engage with scholars through Socratic questioning and gives richer responses that not only answer the prompts but also reflect their personal identity.

How we built it

We used TypeScript for general coding, and SupaBase for our database management. We used Claude Code for ai-assisted coding, and used git and github for version control. Our team met online and in-person to collaborate every step of the way.

Challenges we ran into

We had a lot of fun with this project, which did not come without its challenges. It took many design iterations to implement an effective AI-assisted workflow, and to design a flexible, user-friendly UI that seamlessly supported the backend.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the unique, canvas-based UI that allows for dynamic editing and seamless workflow from start to finish. Our adaptive weighing system performs deep analysis based on details of the scholarship and the user, and leads a dynamic-prompting based experience inspired by Socratic questioning.

What we learned

We learned alot about AI-assisted workflows and application development. We got to experience first-hand the pros and cons of integrating LLMs into software, and had lots of fun implementing agentic solutions relating to natural language engineering. We worked together, bounced ideas and created an application we truly care about, for students by students.

What's next for Socratic AI

In the near future, we hope to implement expansions that would allow:

  • multiple users to collaborate on one board
  • further polished UI for a faster, seamless experience
  • integrated scholarship search
  • smarter ai systems for deeper natural language analysis.
