🚀 Inspiration

In most residential societies, managing visitors, security, staff, and communication is still a big challenge. Popular apps like MyGate exist, but they charge ₹50,000+ per year, which is a heavy burden on RWAs (Resident Welfare Associations). I wanted to create a free alternative that not only saves money but also empowers societies with modern technology.

💡 What it does

Society Buddy — RWA & Security is a smart society management app that provides:

  • Visitor management with QR-based approvals
  • Parking management and vehicle tracking
  • Staff attendance and entry logs
  • Community announcements and updates
  • Revenue opportunities for RWAs instead of expenses

👉 In short, one app that keeps your society secure, connected, and cost-free.

🛠️ How I built it

  • Frontend: React Native + Expo Router for smooth cross-platform development
  • Backend: Node.js with Express, MySQL for structured database handling
  • Authentication & Security: JWT for secure logins, role-based access control for residents/admins/guards
  • Notifications: Push notifications for visitor approvals and announcements
  • Deployment: Hosted backend on cloud server, app published via Google Play Console

⚡ Challenges I ran into

  • Navigating Google Play policies (content rating, permissions like READ_MEDIA_IMAGES, etc.)
  • Setting up secure visitor approval flows that are simple enough for guards and residents to use
  • Creating a design that works equally well for residents, RWAs, and security guards
  • Ensuring zero-cost monetization — figuring out how RWAs can earn without subscription fees

🏆 Accomplishments that I'm proud of

  • Successfully built a full MyGate alternative in record time
  • Managed to keep the app 100% free for societies while offering a revenue model
  • Published the app on the Google Play Store with proper branding, graphics, and descriptions
  • Built a campaign (#MaintenanceMuktSociety) to spread awareness about saving money for RWAs

📚 What I learned

  • Deep insights into Play Store publishing requirements (release details, permissions, content rating)
  • How to build user-friendly flows for both tech-savvy and non-tech-savvy users (like guards)
  • Importance of branding and marketing alongside development (graphics, social media campaigns, hashtags)
  • Real-world application of full-stack skills (React Native + Node.js + MySQL)

🔮 What's next for Society Buddy — RWA & Security

  • Launching iOS version to cover more societies
  • Adding digital payments for society maintenance & bills
  • AI-based face recognition for visitors
  • Expanding campaigns to encourage RWAs to switch from paid apps to Society Buddy
  • Building partnerships with societies to scale across multiple cities
