Inspiration
I wanted to build a simple, social football game where you predict Premier League matches with coins, challenge friends in groups, and climb live leaderboards.
Fantasy football is too time consuming, and I wanted to focus more on socialising with friends with a more social media type of application. Players can invite their own friends and belong to multiple groups - each with their own chat and leaderboard.
What it does
This is a full-stack app which is bit like a customised WhatsApp customised for the premier league football that allows players to belong to different playgroups so that their predictions work across them. This app could also includes football news such as player availability and injury that could help players make predictions.
For the core functionality each weekly schedule of fixtures is shown and players have to predict which team wins, loses or if they draw. A player must place 6 coins of different values and colours that are : 1,2,3,4,7,10 against each predicted result - 10 against the results they are most certain about and 1 against the least certain - the reward being the value of the coin .
How I built it
I put together a very specific PRD with lots of detail as this is a full-stack progressive web app (PWA) so has a lot of complexity, particularly with the data model. It contains a full db at Supabase and includes authentication as well as a full invite viral mechanism to invite friends and create groups.
I had 3 prompt attempts before I felt it was headed in the right direction and then I was able to keep pushing and refining.
Challenges we ran into
The data model was hard to get right and hit burned through a lot of tokens going through migration. It currently integrates data from football-data.org and shows all fixtures for the upcoming season. One of the challenges is that this is hard to test with out real users, so I built a test harness in the admin section that allows for 7 test users and uses fixtures from the 2024/25 season to validate the predictions and scores. I have tried to show this in the video.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This full-stack app was built in less than a week, though previous weeks were spent iterating and learning from the first two prompts.
What we learned
Bolt.new is incredible, though you have to learn how to use it properly and not burn through tokens. Revising the specification mid-way can cause more problems so it's worth thinking through what you really want to do.
What's next for Premier Pundit
I need to test with the upcoming season and with real friends, but for the moment the core functionality is there and tested to a moderate degree.
