Inspiration
Nearly a quarter of adults in the US are estimated to have a mental disorder, particularly a major depressive disorder or an anxiety disorder. Oftentimes people feel isolated by their mental disorders, through this app we would be aiding in fostering a healthy community to help people feel less isolated by their mental disorders, particularly teenagers.
Looking at the most popular mental health apps of 2022, we noticed that many of them are not accessible for a broad range of people. Many are behind paywalls or require insurance. Many are also disorder specific, eg. NOCD is specifically for patients with OCD. This app would combine various features of many such apps, connecting patients with similar disorders and symptoms and create an encouraging environment.
What it does
This app connects patients of various mental disorders with others experiencing similar disorders. This app is entirely anonymous, helping remove some of the pressure caused by the stigma of mental illnesses. This app would allow for users to post text blocks, images, and gifs, about their experiences with their mental disorder. This would allow users to share how they manage symptoms, what medications are working for them, and receive encouragement from people with similar struggles. This app is specifically geared towards teenagers, the group with some of the fewest resources. Many teenagers might not feel comfortable discussing their mental health struggles with parents or counselors due to fears of stigma, this app would allow for teenagers to not feel as alone with their struggles, and find a welcoming and open environment.
How we built it
We used figma to create a prototype. This allowed us to all collaborate on a single document.
Challenges we ran into
One of our team members decided not to come back the second day. Learning Figma was a big hurdle as two of us had never used it before.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The visual aspect and flow. We also put in a lot of research on what is already out there and what can be improved on. We focused a lot on how to best help potential users and basing our designs around creating and aiding the most welcoming community possible.
What we learned
We learned a lot about communications between group members and how to bounce ideas off of one another.
What's next for Social Sprout
We would like to add in a feature so licensed therapists and psychiatrists could join and help monitor chats/ add in some posts giving some expert advice.
