Inspiration

The idea for the Social Network Insights Agent was born out of a desire to make complex graph analytics accessible to everyone. Social networks are rich with hidden patterns—like influential users, communities, and connections—but analyzing them often requires technical expertise. We wanted to bridge this gap by creating a tool that lets users ask questions in plain English and get actionable insights instantly. The rise of large language models (LLMs) and GPU-accelerated graph analytics inspired us to combine these technologies into a seamless, user-friendly experience.

What We Learned

Building this project was a deep dive into cutting-edge technologies:

  • ArangoDB: We learned how to efficiently store and query graph data, leveraging its flexibility and scalability.
  • LangChain: We explored how to process natural language queries and dynamically generate responses using LLMs.
  • NVIDIA cuGraph: We discovered the power of GPU-accelerated graph analytics for handling large-scale datasets.
  • NetworkX: We used it for preprocessing and smaller-scale graph operations.
  • LangGraph: We experimented with multi-agent workflows to handle complex, stateful queries.

This project taught us how to integrate diverse tools into a cohesive system, balancing performance, usability, and scalability.

How We Built It

  1. Data Preparation: We started with the Facebook Social Network dataset, converting it into a graph format and loading it into ArangoDB.
  2. Query Processing: Using LangChain, we built a natural language interface to interpret user queries and determine the appropriate analytics approach.
  3. Analytics Execution: Depending on the query, we dynamically chose between AQL queries, NetworkX algorithms, or cuGraph for GPU-accelerated analytics.
  4. Visualization: We used Matplotlib and Plotly to create intuitive visualizations of the results.
  5. Jupyter Notebook: We documented the entire workflow in an executable notebook, making it easy for others to replicate and build upon.

Challenges Faced

  • Integration Complexity: Combining ArangoDB, LangChain, and cuGraph required careful planning to ensure seamless communication between components.
  • Performance Optimization: Balancing the use of CPU-based (NetworkX) and GPU-accelerated (cuGraph) analytics was challenging, especially for large datasets.
  • Natural Language Understanding: Designing prompts and workflows for LangChain to accurately interpret user queries took significant iteration.
  • Visualization: Creating clear, intuitive visualizations for complex graph analytics results required experimentation with different tools and techniques.

Despite these challenges, the project was a rewarding experience that pushed us to explore new technologies and solve real-world problems in graph analytics.
