Inspiration

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted many aspects of our lifestyles - workers worked from home where possible, students attended online school, and our usual activities were put on hold.

Face-to-face connection with others became near impossible during times when cases peaked; our only way to connect virtually with others is through social media platforms.

While social media has helped bridge connections between family, friends, co-workers etc, we are often inclined to repeatedly check social media to remain ‘up-to-date’ with others, in fear of missing out on their updates. Teenagers and young adults spend in excess 2-3 hours on social media platforms each day, leading to repercussions on their productivity. A study showed that participants received an average of 63.5 notifications per day. [^1]

What it does

Our project ‘Social Media Digest’ aims to reduce the frequency of social media usage, by providing a digest with a summary of social media updates within the user’s specified time frame. The user can see the updates of notifications on the 'Digest' page.

Features of the web application:

  • Users can create personal account to receive social media digest
  • Digest of updates from linked social media accounts
  • Users can select which parts of social media to receive updates e.g. specific friends, specific groups etc.
  • Users can select the frequency of the social media digest

How we built it

We brainstormed main features and functions of the web app to achieve our goal, and translated those features into page designs on figma. The elements on the pages were developed with HTML, CSS and Javascript in a GitHub Repository.

Challenges we ran into

When collating the HTML code for each component, some components were misaligned. We had to carefully work through the code to ensure that each element of the page was aligned and reflected our designs.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of ourselves for committing to this process that would usually take a lot longer to get to where we’re now and supporting each other throughout the event. We are only able to visualise our idea because we each have our strength yet collaborate respectfully.

What we learned

We learned that a solution is much more meaningful when designed with users in mind. Our idea came from observation in our own life, through research and empathising with users, we were able to construct a tool to improve one's experiences.

What's next for Social Media Digest

  • Connecting with more social media accounts to
  • More customisability: Avatar creation (for profile picture), web app usage time log, connect with friends to share usage time log
  • Reward-based incentives: To encourage users to reduce number of times they check their social media notifications.
