Inspiration
Our project has been inspired by different factors such as : ** 1. Youth unemployment challenge *: The African Development Bank warns of 100 million unemployed youth by 2030. This may sow seeds of social exclusion including political and sexual exploitation, religious indoctrination and violent extremism. * 2. Gender Disparities *: Women face worse human development outcomes, earning less, having limited progression opportunities, restricted information access and higher barriers to work entry. Women also bear more caregiving responsibilities and financial constraints. **3. Digital Limitations *: With over 65% smartphone penetration, Africa can harness digital skills to create opportunities for youths, narrowing the gender gap and empowering both men and women in the labour market.
What it does
1. social platform : A learning management system where women can connect with other successful women, learn and get access to opportunities for self-sustainability. 2. Upskilling : Upskilling of women digital skills via EdTech as they earn token incentives. 3. Encouragement : Encouraging community participation amongst women, verifying and earning. 4. Positive Behaviour : Incentivizing positive behaviour inline with community digital education initiatives, green energy, waste management, recycling, textile pollution and afforestation initiatives.
How we built it
Team composition : We had three volunteer developers( 1. Backend dev 2.Frontend dev 3. Designer&frontend dev). We first built a process flow diagram, then an architecture flow diagram which has guided us on building the application. Developing the app : 1. We have backend built with node.js, hedera hashgraph sdk,solidity language. This is for tokenization feature where the application creates native hedera tokens, associate tokens with alias i.e student accounts and then transfers these tokens to each student. 2. The frontend is built with react.js. The features here is user authentication where users such as students, mentors log in to the application. Then they land to the dashboard where they can be redirected to the Learning Management System(LMS).
Challenges we ran into
Defficient team composition : At the onset of building this solution few months ago, we began with a team of 3 developers where I was the team lead. Over a period of time, the other 2 developers dropped out of the project owing to lack of funds for renumeration. I was struggling with effective communication and delegation. Also these slowed down the product development timeline. I thus enrolled for a course in effective leadership that has enabled me build a toolkit for communication. I have also manage to acquire one developer and in the bigger team, we are two developers. The project is not complete but we have a roadmap of completing in the next 6months.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Community : We have a flourishing community of more than 100 women in blockchain technology and women in technology leaders from 25 counties in Kenya who are builders, founders, mentors CEOs, community experts, sales and marketing experts both from private, public and NGOs, all with one vision and goal - to empower women and underprivilleged girls through the power of blocckchain and web3. Awards and nominations : Being the founder of 1 year old-Women in Blockchain Technology Kenya(WBTK), which is an EdTech initiative keen on providing platform for mentoring, educating and empowering underprivilleged girls and women in Kenya and Africa society through the use of blochchain and web3.0, I am proud to say that I am a nominee of Aurora Tech Award. Aurora Tech Award acknowledges tech start ups and initiatives founded by women.
What we learned
Partnerships and Collaborations : We have learned to partner and collaborate with organizations that bring together synergies in a logic of sharing knowledge, technology, training and financing. Besides, the leadership course that I attended positions me to lead teams in the technology industry.
What's next for Social Learn To Earn platform
Features : we already have built the user authentication feature on the frontend. We have already strated building the Learning Management System(LMS), which is almost complete. Finally, we shall integrate the tokenization (verify to earn) feature to our frontend.
Deployment : The backend has been deployed to the production server while the frontend has not been deployed to any production server. After finishing the frontend and integrating with backend, we shall deploy complete work to production server and also Hedera mainnet server in the next 6months.
