Inspiration

I came up with this project from a position very close to me. I've seen the crisis playing out on an international scale all over the world — from Syria to Ukraine to recently Palestine's horrific war. I have a Palestinian person near and dear to my heart who directly has their life impacted by war, and seeing their struggles taught me just how much we here in America, for instance, take schooling for granted. While millions of people fight to survive and rebuild, their family is losing the ability to use one of the greatest hope and opportunity weapons: learning. I wanted to do something, however little, that would enable people to keep learning no matter where they are or what they are going through.

What It Does

The Refugee Education Tool is designed to provide plain, easy-to-use educational support in multiple languages. If someone requires help with straightforward school tasks, language, or learning about new topics, this tool aims to provide a reliable, multilingual support someone can utilize. It's not designed to solve all problems, but rather be a small light of explanation and help for someone who is facing unimaginable hardships.

How We Built It

I built this tool from the Gemini API with a lot of care to keep it as easy and helpful as possible. I did not want the tool to overwhelm users but instead provide easy and helpful responses that would make a real difference.

Challenges We Faced

One of the biggest challenges I faced was learning and processing different types of data — understanding when I was dealing with text files, and when I needed to process AI configuration files. Making sure that the tool was capable of accurately processing and responding to different types of information was crucial in producing something that truly works in practice.

Things I'm Proud Of

I'm so glad that the tool is multilingual. Being a project about the struggles of refugees worldwide, being multilingual was what I considered most important to make it work. To have this tool able to help someone read a math problem in Arabic, read an English science problem, or help explain something in French or Spanish is just fantastic.

What I Learned

At first, I had imagined building something that would do it all: education support, health advice, job listings, video language translation, and even mental health facts. But before long, I realized that was more than I could handle at once, and my work was starting to appear sloppy and rushed. It was hard to admit, but by focusing on a single core purpose — education — I was able to do something meaningful and do it well. I learned that it is not possible to end all of the world's ills at once, but to work at one task with care and consideration can be effective. I also learned that empathy and connection to humanity are drivers of effective work. This was more than a project in coding; it became something that made me more empathetic to the plight of individuals and pushed me to work with passion.

What's Next for the Refugee Education Tool

I want this tool to find its way into the hands of those who truly need it. I hope it helps refugees who are striving to rebuild and continue learning in the midst of what they are going through. But other than that, I think this tool can also be useful for students like me — people who sometimes get lost or confused with their schoolwork. I'd love to keep working on it, adding more languages and functionalities, and making it even more useful for anyone who needs a little extra help and guidance.
