My Inspiration
Given the recent COVID-19 pandemic, and its subsequent upheaval of normal life, I wanted to create something that would allow for people to remain safe. The best way to stay safe during these uncertain times are to maintain social distancing at all times. This means making sure that you are at least six feet away from everyone else when braving the public. Ensuring this safe distance from others entails being vigilant at all times, and of course everyone is on edge when they must venture outside. The social distance warning I have created allows for people to maintain safe distances at all times, as the obnoxious buzzer will warn away anyone who dares to get too close.
Design Process
The process was a mixture of different labs that we have performed during the course of this class. Using hardware and coding skills learned in this class, I was able to successfullly create a social distancing warning. I wanted to make this device as simple and effective as I could, and wanted it to be easy to access and user-friendly.
Hardware Specifications
A ping sensor is used to detect the distance of the other person from the user of my device. Attached is also a buzzer which emits a loud and annoying noise to scare the other person away. If this blatant and alarming sound isn't enough to frighten the social distance violator, an lcd screen is also attached warning the violator to back up. After the perpetrator has backed up the required distance, the buzzer will cease its blaring and all will be well.
Real-World Issues
The main issue with this device is that the ping sensor can only find the distance from directly in front of it. This could result in the ping sensor being pointed to the front of the user, while someone approaches too close for comfort from the rear. Essentially, this problem could be made less severe by replicating the device and attaching it where it could account for all angles surrounding the user.
Potential Additions
If given the chance to build a physical device, I likely would have attached the social distance warning to a hat of some sort that could constantly rotate about the head of the user. The most viable method would be to attach the arduino to a propeller hat that could constantly rotate to account for potential violators from all angles.
