Our Team
John, Kenny, and Arushi are members of the Red Tigers Team, developers of Social Distancing: The Game™.
Inspiration
This year, we're all experiencing a very different HackSC due to the coronavirus pandemic. We knew we wanted to incorporate some kind of coronavirus themes into our idea because of its prevalence and daily effects on our lives, but we also wanted to make sure to focus on our choice of vertical and the RippleX challenges. To combine all of these into one project, we came up with the idea of Social Distancing: The Game™.
What it does
Our game is built using the Unity game engine and C# scripts. The main player can be controlled using the arrows on a keyboard, or the equivalent keys of w-a-s-d. The objective of the game is to stay away from, or socially distance from, the other players in the game, noticeable because of the red covid fields surrounding them. Additionally, some green health pills will be available in the scene; coming into contact with one of those pill will increase health, but each pill will disappear after one use. If you lose all your health, you lose the game. If you're able to survive without your health bar going all the way down to 0 for 30 seconds, you win the game. More details can be explored by checking out the game!
Challenges we ran into
Honestly, almost everything. Among the members of our team, our skill levels with Unity and C# varied from 0 experience to pretty advanced. Integrating XRP as a currency for our game was definitely one of the most daunting tasks, since we'd never worked with XRP before and spent a good amount of time figuring out how to add it to Unity. In the end, we weren't able to fully integrate it, so we made our pill free-of-charge rather than available for a price.
Accomplishments that we're proud of, and what we learned
Although we may not have accomplished everything we originally wanted to, we're proud of what we were able to make: our players, covid-infected characters, covid bubbles, health bar, pills, etc. Our team learned so much in the process, about Unity, C#, XRP, and game development in general.
What's next for Social Distancing: The Game™
There are still many improvements and much room for change left in this game. For starters, we could probably add more items that can be purchased using XRP to improve the health of players once infected with covid. Additionally, we could add more covid-infected players, with different levels of spreadable infections. We could also add self-recovery, an alternative to purchasing medicines or vaccines, if a player stays a reasonable distance away from infected players for a certain amount of time.
