Inspiration

We start with the idea that currently there are available professional solutions as MIDI instruments that allows you yo practice in your home. On the other hand, there are some disadvantages like expensive software for this instruments that are not affordable for all. We previously have developed a prototype of a bagpipe, since is a so extended traditional galician instrument, the main problem of this instrument is that it sound so high so is difficult to find a place where practice and learn. Based on this requirement, we decided to develop an application that can solve this problem, giving the musicians the tools to practice this instrument and share there knowledge with the community.

What it does

The app is an early prototype of a social media for musicians around the world. More specific those familiar with the midi format and people who want to learn new tracks that are kinda hard to find. Also due to the format it's easy to expand to new sounds and instruments.

How we built it

We thought that a social media would be great for our idea, so we build some screens where you can interact with the songs people upload and see the music sheet and also listen to them. You can follow new people and reach out persons that inspire you. In a more technical way, we build this app using Python and Django, we also did some HTML5 and Javascript. We are totally new to the web app world so we knew this could be a challenge, and indeed it was.

Challenges we ran into

The first of all was the lack of knowledge of technologies such as Django and Javascript, but that didn't tear us down in our way to achieve our goal. At first the challenge was the connections between the modules of the application, but then it was smooth as silk (kinda). We had one mayor problem in the last stage of the develop when we couldn't connect two of our modules, the one that uses Machine Learning and the list of songs uploaded to the feed.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are really proud of completing this challenge as we expected and despite the technical knowledge we have. We learnt a lot and we hope we will continue in our way to expand the faculties we have

What's next for Social Bagpiper

We are so happy with the result that we get but is true that in the future we should improve this system with so interesting features like MIDI recording that will allow the community to obtain how the people that do not know about music language plays the songs of their places and maintain the tradition and the culture of the galician music.

Also the power of the social networks to give knowledge about one specific field, if the application is taking by the players and them give their songs, the music sheets, they midi tracks, and their songs recordings, this social media will be able to be like a library or a museum of the traditional sounds of Galicia.
