Inspiration

Growing up in the beaches of California I am no stranger to the struggle of finding new things to do during this summer season. So as a homage to my city I set out to create a platform that allows tourist and locals to easily explore, plan and share their beach adventures.

What it does

CoastExplor provides a platform with a variety of tools and functions that allow people to explore local locations and beaches. Users can peruse a dataset of beaches with images, directions, and weather readouts. Additionally users can schedule and plan out their own beach adventures with their family and friends. Provided with additional mapping, scheduling, and weather tools.

How we built it

The initial project was built on top of a previous project I was unable to complete. The UI was designed with figma and built with React JS, Tailwindcss, and Material UI. The backend was handled with a rest apis built with Python and Flask, alongside the Twilio API, Weather API, and The Google Maps API coupled with Firebase's Firestore database.

Challenges we ran into

Challenges working with Google Maps API in the React app prohibited some of the functionality of working with multiple locations. My work around was to create sample data within Firestore of some of the local beaches as a way to emulate what would have been leveraged by the Google Maps API.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am proud of the final product in terms of the UI, although it is lacking in some of the desired features, the build process in creating the interface was met with very little bugs and/or issues

What we learned

I learned how to use various services such as the Google Cloud Platform, and Twilio and how to manage styles using TailwindCSS
