Inspiration
We created this app to help people, who want to quit their alcohol addiction, a way to do so virtually. Due to covid, many AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) meetings are online. In an online setting, individuals are unable to get their monthly sobriety chips from their rehabilitation center. As an alternative, this app would allow them to still receive rewards for their monthly milestone, and feel like they have something to work towards. For people who suffer from addiction, refraining from drinking for so long can be very difficult. Sometimes small rewards can be very encouraging and make addicts realize that overcoming their addiction is a big achievement.
What it does
This app allows users who suffer from alcoholism a way to redeem their sobriety chips, through a mobile device. Every month, you reach a new sobriety milestone. On that day, you will get to collect your sobriety chip and redeem it, in the apps capsule machine. Every time you redeem a chip, you collect a new prize. The longer you stay sober, the more prizes you will get.
How we built it
The login screen of this app was built using expo.io. It was coded with react-native. For the design of the app, we used Figma, a prototyping tool that is primarily web-based. We used IOS components and icons, along with stock images, to complete the design of the app.
Challenges we ran into
- Running an emulator on Visual Studio Code. Use of a slow laptop, that wasn't able to run an emulator while coding, so it took up a majority of our time trying to find a solution
- Learning how to navigate expo.io for the first time
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Creating a social good app that can help many recovering alcoholics
- Design, UX experience, User Interface
What we learned
We learned how to use problem solve and adapt to situations. Although it took us sometime to find a solution to the emulator problem, we eventually did and were able to incorporate some of it into our app. We learned how to use snack.expo.io for the first time.
What's next for Sobriety
Future steps for Sobriety include adding more variety to prizes based on user preference. The users would be served based on their likes, hobbies, and favorites so that the app can tailor to their desires. The addition of more personalized incentives will hopefully encourage AA members to push through, and not give up their sobriety.
