Inspiration
This website was made so that people are encouraged to learn about a broader group of accomplished innovators, rather than just the more common, well known few. I started to feel strongly about this issue after learning about Rosalind Franklin, because of how little people know about her despite her invaluable contributions to science.
What it does
So You’ve Heard Of… is a website designed to educate the public about iconic women of history and their accomplishments. Each category provides a famous man in the designated field or jurisdiction. Once clicked on, users are sent to a page that teaches them about an accomplished woman in the same field, and provides access to a source where they can learn more. There is also a fun facts page where users can click buttons to learn a fun fact from each of the trailblazing women.
How I built it
I built this website on the platform, Glitch. It allows me to create and manage multiple .html, .css, and .js files, as well as import and store assets such as .jpg files to put in the website. I also used Google Drawings to create the logo, Google Docs to plan the website, and Google Drive to organize the various documents.
Challenges I ran into
Some challenges that I ran into were the time constraints of the Hackathon, and some issues with the JavaScript. I'm more confident with CSS and HTML, so it took me longer to accomplish what I wanted with the js. I struggled to get the messages to display the message when the buttons were pressed. I'm happy to report that I did eventually get all of the buttons and JavaScript commands working. :)
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I'm very proud of the JavaScript commands that I got working, the images that I was able to put in the website, and the color scheme and logo that I designed myself.
What I learned
I learned how to use JavaScript commands more effectively, and how to create an interesting and interactive navigation bar. I also improved my ability to create links between html pages.
What's next for So You've Heard Of...
Hopefully I will be able to continue to add more information and features to the website.
