Inspiration
Going into this Hackathon, we wanted to challenge ourselves by learning a completely new coding language. All of our team members were excited to dive into the Pico 8 workshop and meet all of the challenges that come with tackling an entirely new project in unfamiliar territory. We sought to learn as much as we could by branching out from our comfort zones!
What it does
This is a short game where you play as a bundled-up rabbit that hops and runs through the snow. The snowy background is meant to be relaxing, and the upbeat music gets you into the spirit of the holidays.
How we built it
After attending the Pico-8 workshop, we watched many tutorials on youtube and read many guides. We dove right into coding and learned how to debug in Lua and Pico8 along the way!
Challenges we ran into
Being an entirely new language to us, it was tough to familiarize ourselves with the new syntax. None of us have experience with music composition or reading music notes, so that was a fun learning exercise! Debugging took quite a bit of work, but with the help of tutorials, we managed to get everything running smoothly!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We learned an entirely new language! In such a short amount of time, we managed to accomplish a lot. Working with pixels and creating a map was a difficult process that we tackled, and the snow effect came out really nicely!
What we learned
We learned new syntax for a new language and exposed ourselves to a new medium. Patience and teamwork got us a long way, and we learned how capable we are of meeting new challenges with positivity.
What's next for Snow Bunny Dance
We were working on new soundtracks that we, unfortunately, were not able to implement in a short amount of time. Adding more songs would be a top priority! The background could also be more fleshed out to be even more festive, and we would love to add more characters for the bunny to play with!
