Inspiration

The reason to build this game is to bring back nostalgic memories of the classic Queen's game. In high school, a local newspaper had a column dedicated to board and puzzle games like this one. My friends and I used to play and compete after school. I also noticed many people playing the other version of this game on other social media platforms. That inspired me to bring the experience to my favourite hangout place i.e., Reddit. The game includes a Reddit touch with puzzle that refreshes every day, a zen mode to help you become great at this, and option to create custom puzzles created by Redditors for Redditors.

What it does

  • Offers a daily puzzle challenge that refreshes every midnight, encouraging Redditors to return and compete.
  • Includes a zen mode for relaxed, unlimited practice to improve skills so that the game never stops.
  • Option for other Redditors to create their own puzzle and share with the other Redditors. This increases the community engagement.
  • Tracks player performance with leaderboards to highlight top performers and daily crown winners.
  • Provides a simple, fun gameplay experience inspired by the classic Queen's game with a Reddit touch.

How we built it

  • The game is built with the help of the Devvit which is the Reddit's Developer Platform.
  • On the frontend, it uses React for the logic and rendering the game elements. For adding the styles, TailwindCSS has been used.
  • To support the backend, I used APIs and tools provided by Devvit.

Challenges we ran into

  • Creating a custom splash screen was a challenge. The default screen didn't fit the game's vibe, but with help from the Discord community and AI on the Devvit docs, I replaced it successfully.
  • Reducing the game's loading time was another challenge. To improve this, I optimized asset sizes and used Redis storage for faster data retrieval.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • I'm proud of what I've built for myself and other Redditors. The game has already received positive feedback from the Discord community, which has been helpful for improvements.
  • I've gained strong familiarity with Reddit’s development tools, which will help me create more complex games in the future.

What we learned

  • Increased confidence with the Devvit platform and its documentation, realizing the potential for building various types of games.
  • Deepened understanding of the classic Queen's game logic, improved my problem solving skills via its implementation.

What's next for Snoo's Crown

  • Adding streaks to establish positive competition.
  • Adding the support for the custom 7x7 grid.
  • Enabling users to share their achievements and score on Reddit, fostering friendly competition and encouraging faster completion of challenges.
